Veneers & Lumineers

Veneers & Lumineers

Veneers and Lumineers (which are a brand of veneers) are solutions to broken or discolored teeth to restore a glossy, white color for a beautiful smile. Veneers and Lumineers will give you instant cosmetic improvement and will also help prevent future issues.

The Difference Between Veneers and Lumineers

Veneers are made of porcelain and are permanently bonded to your teeth through a process that usually takes 2-3 weeks. Once bonded, veneers give you immediate cosmetic improvement and also are resistant to stains, meaning your white, glossy teeth will last a long time.

Lumineers are not permanent, which is one main difference. Also, Lumineers are made of an ultra-thin laminate rather than porcelain. Lumineers are thinner and less expensive, but they won’t last as long as veneers.

Should I get veneers or Lumineers?

We’ll discuss the best solution for you if you look like a candidate for veneers or Lumineers. There’s a lot to consider:

  • Veneers are permanent, Lumineers are semi-permanent
  • Veneers are porcelain, Lumineers are ultra-thin laminate
  • Veneers are better at hiding a broken or severely discolored tooth
  • Lumineers are less expensive
  • Veneers last longer and resist stains better
  • Lumineers can be done in a much quicker time
  • Lumineers don’t require any tooth grinding

There are pros and cons to both veneers and lumineers, and while it may appear confusing at first, your specific situation will guide us toward a recommended solution.

Veneers and Lumineers FAQs

Getting veneers perfectly matched to your teeth typically takes around three weeks. We start with a consultation, after which we’ll grind your teeth (they need to be thinner so we can fit the veneers in your mouth).

We then take a mold of your teeth and fit you with temporary veneers while the lab makes your porcelain veneers designed specifically for your mouth.

Once the veneers are created and sent to our office, you come in for the final stage in which we permanently cement the veneers onto your teeth.

Lumineers are far less involved than veneers in the preparation stages. At your first appointment, we’ll take a mold of your teeth but we won’t need to do any grinding at all. Because of this, you also don’t need temporary veneers between this appointment and your next appointment.

We send the mold to the lab and wait approximately three weeks for the lumineers to be created.

At your next appointment, we bond the lumineers to your teeth.

After having your veneer or lumineer bonded to your teeth, it’s normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold. It’s also normal to have sore gums for a few days.

Along with brushing and flossing twice daily, if you have veneers or lumineers, you should pay special attention to the gum line as it may be a bit harder to clean in that area with veneers and lumineers.

As long as you’re consistent and thorough with your oral health practices, your veneers or lumineers should last at least 10 years.
